The Chozeh of Lublin once conversed with a simple Jew that was resolute in his fulfillment of the Mitzvot.
“I am jealous of you,” remarked the Chozeh, “for you are more righteous than I am. I Rebbe is forced to be religious as his actions are constantly under watch.”
“If, God forbid, the Chozeh will walk four cubits with unwashed hands, there will be a tumult that the Chozeh is not careful regarding netilat yadayim. However, you are a simple Jew that no one pays attention to, yet you are nevertheless God fearing. Indeed, you are the true tzaddik.”
