One day, after the services, R. Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev wished a “shalom aleichem” to one of the congregants.
Somewhat surprised the man said: “I live here, and have not travelled anywhere, why then are you wishing me a ‘shalom aleichem?'”
R. Levi Yitzchak replied:
I saw that during the shemona esrei you traveled – in your mind – to various cities and markets to do business, therefore, it is only proper that I greet you upon your return.”
