Inflicting Pain on Another

When a person causes pain to another creature – even when the pain is deserved – they, so to speak, cause pain to the Almighty. It is for this reason that the high courts would fast the day that the executed an individual to assuage their “sin.”

Regarding this, the Mishna (Sanhedrin 46a) states: “When a man suffers, what expression does the Shechina use? ‘My head is heavy for Me, My arm is heavy for Me. If God is so grieved over the blood of the wicked that is shed, how much more so for the blood of the righteous.”
